We Leave Tomorrow

Reflecting back on this week, our last one at Vivo, I realize that we have had many wonderful experiences that I will remember for a very long time. It has been pretty windy in the afternoons and swimming in the ocean was impossible but that same wind kept us from being very hot as the temperatures were around 32C. We were able to walk comfortably along the pristine beach most days. We still see the occasional whale heading north and dolphins still put on a show for us. But the best wildlife experience was seeing a sea turtle laying her eggs on the beach and then covering up the large hole she had dug and returning to the sea. Maybe she had been one of the turtles released from this beach years ago.We don't usually see that in the day time but we were lucky enough to be here when it happened this week.
We have had many dinners out with friends this week as well. We said goodbye to Jamie and Denise at their favorite restaurant, Pascale's. We will see them next year back here I think. Then 17 of us went out on Sunday evening and ended up at the best spot for tacos in Puerto, La Olita, in Zicatela. It's a small spot and while we looked like a Canadian invasion, we filled up the whole restaurant and made the owners very happy on a slow night. The fish tacos that I had were delicious and everyone enjoyed their meals. It was a great night followed by another on Monday when we all went to Ben Zaa for their famous margaritas and pizza. Again we overwhelmed the hosts with our number but they coped very well and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves again. Last night we went out with Liz and Dave G., and Cindy and Dave S. to the Chinese restaurant in Chila. It was again excellent -especially the chicken wings. This time I had the sweet and sour ones and they were delicious. We have arranged to get together in Kitchener in June when our friend Gary will fly up from NYC. we will have a group of 11 or 12 there. I hope our plan works out.
We leave tomorrow and plan to go to Oaxaca to stay overnight. Our friends Bruce and Tracey are there right now and we hope to catch up to them for dinner tomorrow. They will be in Oaxaca for 3 days before flying to Mexico City and then home to BC. We will see them all next year-at least that is our plan.
We have had a great winter here due to the fantastic weather and especially the wonderful people we have met. It's a great community and we look forward to returning.

Catching Up

As our time in Puerto Escondido comes down to the last few weeks, I'm trying to add some more photos. They are a bit random but they give a sense of our time here. On St. Patrick's Day we were invited to a party next door. Elaine and Lorne are such great partygivers. We met some new people and saw "old" friends as well. It was great fun and we only had to step out of their condo turn left and enter our condo! The food was great too. We also met a woman from Chila who has a restaurant there. We will make a point of finding it.
Last night we visited Heather and Wayne in their beautiful condo looking over the water and to the west. New buildings will change their view but it will still be beautiful. People often host simple sunset parties. A few appetizers and some wine or beer and everyone leaves by 7:30 or 8:00 and go back to have dinner in their own condos. Very easy entertaining.
One of our friends has a drone and he has taken some amazing videos and photos with it. I have shared photos of Gary's amazing house that I know I've mentioned before. I LOVE his house.
We went our for dinner with some friends recently and heard some live music at the restaurant Fresh that we have visited before. The evening was beautiful and we enjoyed our time with our friends.
Today we went in search of Malu's Restaurant in Chila. Chila is so much closer and quieter than Puerto Escondido. I now go there for fruits and vegetables and we enjoy exploring the streets. Malu is the person we met on St. Patrick's Day . We found the restaurant and really enjoyed our lunch of garlic fish filet and potatoes and salad. Tom had two beers (20 pesos) and I had limonada (30 pesos each). Nothing is cheaper to drink than beer here. The total bill was 250 pesos including a big tip. That's about $17.50 CDN. We were the only people their and we had a good time with Malu. We communicated using google translator. That was interesting! We were the only people in the restaurant.
Many of our friends are leaving each day. So there are many goodbyes and more to come.

Andreas Time with Us

We had a wonderful visit with Andrea. She arrived on March 7 and left on March 14. While most of the time was spent in the pool and ocean, we did venture out. We went to the Adoquin and enjoyed a oceanside dinner at Pasquales and then a visit through the Night Market. The Adoquin is the main tourist street in this area of Puerto Escondido. It has many restaurants and shops and a lively nightlife. We also went to a very quiet area on the Laguna called La Alejandria. We went with Elaine and Lorne and had lunch at the rustic restaurant. It was good and cheap. There is a very small shop where you can buy jewellry for between $10-40 pesos. Andrea and I stocked up on earrings and bracelets.
We also went to a Chinese restaurant that we had heard good things about in Chila. It was very good and we had so much to take home and have for two more meals. Lorne and Elaine also invited us for dinner with another couple from Georgetown, Ontario. Elaine is a really excellent cook. Over the course of the week we visited Playa Manzanilla and Playa Angelito with Andrea and swam in the ocean. But Andrea also swam in the ocean here with high waves that she handled really well. She participated in many pool and beach volleyball games too. We spent time also at Playa Zicatela during the day (not much action during the day) and ended with a delightful lunch at Espedin overlooking Playa Carrizillio. Beautiful!!
Everyone here were so friendly and helpful to Andrea. I know she really appreciated that.

Update

We are still enjoying our time here in Puerto Escondido. The only problem I've had is that my beloved Blackberry has died. I haven't taken any photos since then of course so new photos will have to wait a bit.
Since that time we have met up with two friends from Collingwood and had a wonderful evening at Fresh and went back to their place, Casa Lily, for wine and laughs. It was wonderful to see people from home. That was the night my phone died. A friend here at Vivo works for Blackberry and she managed to order me a new one at a good price, and have it shipped to Edmonton from Waterloo. It arrived at Andrea's desk last Friday and she was able to bring it down when she came on Tuesday. I haven't set it up yet and need some help. Meanwhile we are having a wonderful visit with Andrea. The weather back in Edmonton is cold and windy but here it's still wonderful. We do notice it is more humid and can be very hot. But relief is just a dunk in the pool and then finding a bit of shade to be totally comfortable. We haven't ventured into town with Andrea as yet but will do so today I think. We have several excursions planned. Andrea takes lots of photos and I will post them when I can. Last night we went to dinner at our neighbors' Lorne and Elaine. It was so pleasant and Andrea felt welcomed by everyone. We had to turn down two other invitations for last evening so our social life is good here. There was an amazing event here on Monday evening. A dinner /dance organized by our friend Bruce. He had booked a wonderful couple who sing beautifully. She has a smoky voice that lends itself to songs I love like Smooth Operator. We had a wonderful 3 course dinner of either chicken or fish. Almost 100 were there. There was a silent auction to which many people donated beautiful and interesting items or activities. All this is to benefit the Vivo Foundation that serves the community in great ways. Mostly it was great fun with friends here and we danced and enjoyed ourselves all evening. I'm sure they will hold another event like this again. It was a shame Andrea missed it by a day. She would have loved it too.
