We left Vivo about 7:35am. Our destination was
Oaxaca City, the capital of Oaxaca State. We had made arrangements to meet our friends Tracy and Bruce for dinner and after a hair raising drive through the mountains it was wonderful to relax on a perfect evening in one of Oaxaca's restaurants overlooking the
Zocalo.
El Asador Vasco was wonderful. Great food and service. Our waitress Dolores has been serving their for 39 years! We didn't have much time to see the sights in Oaxaca but we saw and heard enough to want to return for several days. It was so much fun to meet up with Bruce and Tracy again. Our hotel was in a very good location and we enjoyed our short stay there.
CasAntica, a former convent, is filled with interesting artifacts and furniture. We would stay there again. It had all the comforts of a modern hotel (including really good wifi) but the charm of an old monument building. Thanks to our friends Wayne and Heather for recommending it to us.
Our drive through the twisting mountain roads was harrowing and Tom was so tired after the drive. We can't wait for the new highway to be built but we aren't holding our breathe. It took well over 6 hours including Hwy 200 and the city of
Pochutla The road surfaces were pretty good but the twists and turns and oncoming cars was not fun. Kudos to Tom for doing all the driving. On the other hand we saw spectacular vistas, varied forests, and quaint small villages along the way.
The next day we headed for
Puebla. It was supposed to be a short drive from Oaxaca, but with construction and traffic it was not an easy drive. For some reason young people had taken over the toll booths and they let us go through. We offered them $20 pesos but they turned it down. What's up with that? Also we had GPS failure at the end of the trip and we had to really hunt for our hotel. We had chosen to stay at a hotel close to the highway so we would have an easy exit. The GPS led us to some pretty rough streets but it rebounded and got us to the right spot. Unfortunately we didn't get to see the historical areas of Puebla but did get to see the volcanoes in the distance. The town warrants a return visit. Our
hotel was quite nice and relaxing even though it was on the outskirts. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
After breakfast we left for San Luis Potosi. We wanted to take the Arco Norte to bypass Mexico City and avoid the difficulties we had on our trip down. The roads were great and traffic was fine perhaps because it was Sunday. We didn't have and difficulties and returned to the same
hotel we stayed in before. We had dinner at the same
restaurant next door that we enjoyed so much three months ago! Tomorrow morning we will be taking the car to a local dealer to have an oil and filter change and then we will be on our way again to stay just outside Monterrey. That will be a late start and a late arrival at our hotel. The next day we will get an early start and cross the border into Laredo, Texas.
I promise to get the photos uploaded and posted very soon.
